The American Dictionary defines the word “fervent” as “showing strong and sincere feelings or beliefs.” The synonyms include ardent, devout, earnest, heartfelt. To be fervent is to display or to have a passionate emotion for anything.

When associated with prayer, the meaning is often mistakenly associated with loudness, extreme emotionalism and verbiage. A prayer can be fervent without any of the above descriptions.

In teaching His disciples how to pray, Jesus said “And when you pray, do not keep babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” Matt.6:7-8. Compare the prayer of Elijah and that of the 850 prophets of Baal. 1 Kgs.18:25-29,36. Another similar example is the one between the Pharisee and the Publican. Lu.18:11-14.

A fervent prayer does not need to be unusually long and verbose. Compare the prayer of the thief on the cross.” Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” Lu.23:42. Peter facing the storms cried out,” …Lord, save me.” Matt.14:30. None of the petitioners failed to obtain their request. Every one of the prayers was passionate, devout, earnest, heartfelt, of few words and still fervent and obtained desired answers. Simplicity is also a secret of a fervent prayer.
