God created humans in His image and gave them free will to exercise. That makes humans unique and ranks far above the rest of creation. Unfortunately, we have and continue to abuse our free will by making choices that do not square up with God’s will. Adam and Eve exercised their free will in the garden by eating the forbidden fruit, and we still suffer from that choice’s consequences. God honored their wishes in both situations, but the outcomes were unpleasant. Jesus exemplifies for us how to exercise our free will. When facing the cross, He expressed His will to the Father, “Take this cup from me …” but did not stop there as we often do. He added, “Yet not my will, but what you will.” (Mk. 14:36). Until the exercise of my will is in sync with God’s will, I am heading to a regrettable end. The right choice is when I choose God’s will and align my will with His.
